Every session of the Pow Wow begins with a color guard presenting the flags. There are American flags hanging all around the arena. Military veterans are frequently honored and are invited to help take down the flags at the end of the day. The arena is circular and the audience sits in bleachers around the outside. At the beginning of each session the dancers are lead into the arena by the head dancer. The dancers walk around the circular arena. The dancers are accompanied by a circle of drummers who sit in the center of the arena. Many of the dancers wear very fancy costumes that include lots of feathers, quills, and beads. The costumes have many personalized designs that have special meaning for the dancer who wears the costume. The entire family participates in the pow wow-men, women, and children. An announcer speaks during much of the pow wow offering introductions and commentary.
